The wine region of Douro or Alto Douro Vinhateiro has more than 26 thousand hectares, this region has been producing wines for over 2000 years, the most famous being the famous Port Wine. Its origins date back to the 17th century, when Port Wine began to be produced and exported in quantity, especially to England. However, the high profits obtained with these exports, would generate situations of fraud, abuse and adulteration of the quality of fortified wine. It is necessary to create the General Company of Agriculture of the Vineyards of Alto Douro. The Douro Demarcated Region is divided into 3 distinct zones, of which, the Baixo-Corgo - with approximately 51% of the area occupied by vines, is the entire right bank of the Douro River; Cima-Corgo - with approximately 36%, is based on the previous one and goes to the meridian that passes through the Cachão da Valeira; the Douro Superior - with approximately 13%, is based on the previous one and goes to the Spanish border. The great diversity of grape varieties in the Douro, due to the climate derivation, demonstrates the optimal conditions for the cultivation of vines in the region. More recently there had to be a renewal in the choice of the varieties produced, so it can be highlighted as the red varieties chosen by Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional.
